Empowering the next generation to break the cycle of poverty through learning
Friendship Place partners with Freedom Readers for our Georgetown LEARNS program. Together, we aim to improve reading skills through one-to-one literacy tutoring sessions for elementary aged children all across Georgetown County. Along with the tutoring, our scholars are sent home with a book. As a part of Georgetown Learns our scholars are provided meal for their household.
We also collaborate with various community partners to make learning fun through educating our scholars on relevant life topics.
In South Carolina, only 34% of fourth-grade students scored at or above proficient in reading in 2019.
It is predicted that if a child is not reading proficiently in the 4th grade, he or she will have approximately a 78% chance of not catching up.
2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.
The cycle can be broken.
Our program cultivates essential qualities for lifelong success,
encourages exploration and fosters a growth mindset towards self-discovery.

“The most important thing we teach is reading. The more affluent a reader you are, the more successful student you are likely to be.”
Keith Price
